Marriage Counseling

Thoughtful, Structured Care for Couples

Marriage counseling at Humble Beginnings Counseling is designed to help couples understand and change the patterns that create distance, conflict, or repeated breakdowns in connection. Rather than focusing solely on communication tips or surface‑level solutions, our work addresses the underlying dynamics that shape how partners relate, respond to stress, and attempt to protect what matters most.

This is clinical, goal‑directed therapy—intended for couples experiencing distress, recurring conflict, loss of trust, or difficulty navigating significant life transitions.

Common Reasons Couples Seek Counseling

Couples may pursue marriage counseling for concerns such as:

  • Chronic conflict, withdrawal, or emotional disconnection
  • Communication breakdowns or escalating arguments
  • Trust injuries, infidelity, or secrecy
  • Differences around parenting, finances, or values
  • Substance use or mental health concerns affecting the relationship
  • Major transitions (marriage, faith shifts, illness, career changes)

While the presenting issue may vary, the focus is on identifying patterns that keep the relationship stuck and building more effective ways of relating over time.

How Marriage Counseling Is Structured

Marriage counseling is collaborative and intentional. Therapy typically includes:

  • Clarifying shared and individual goals for treatment
  • Identifying recurring interaction patterns and emotional triggers
  • Developing skills for regulation, communication, and repair
  • Addressing accountability and responsibility on both sides
  • Practicing new behaviors within and between sessions

Sessions are guided, not passive. The goal is to support change that can be sustained outside the therapy room.

Using Structured Relationship Assessment (PREPARE/ENRICH)

When appropriate, we incorporate PREPARE/ENRICH, a well‑established relationship assessment tool, as part of marriage counseling. This assessment provides structured feedback across key areas of relationship functioning, such as communication, conflict management, expectations, intimacy, and shared values.

Within counseling, PREPARE/ENRICH is used to:

  • Bring clarity to strengths and growth areas
  • Inform treatment goals and therapeutic focus
  • Reduce guesswork and assumptions about the relationship
  • Support productive, focused conversations

The assessment is a tool, not a substitute for therapy. Results are reviewed collaboratively and integrated into the broader counseling process.

One-time assessment & Materials (workbook) Fee applies =$45.  This fee represents our actual cost for these items and is not billable to insurance.

Counseling vs. Relationship Enrichment: How We Determine the Right Path

The same assessment tool can be used in different ways depending on a couple’s level of distress, goals, and clinical needs.

  • When couples are experiencing significant distress, PREPARE/ENRICH is used within marriage counseling as part of a clinical treatment plan. This may involve diagnosing and treating relational and individual mental health concerns, and services may be eligible for insurance depending on coverage.
  • When couples are functioning relatively well and seeking growth or prevention, PREPARE/ENRICH may be used as a structured relationship enrichment or coaching process. In these cases, the work focuses on strengthening the relationship rather than treating clinical distress.

Determining the appropriate path is a collaborative decision based on assessment, discussion, and clarity about goals. Coaching is not billable to insurance.  This ensures care is ethical, appropriate, and aligned with your needs.

Frequency and Expectations

Most couples begin with weekly sessions to establish momentum and safety, adjusting frequency as progress is made. Meaningful change requires participation from both partners, openness to feedback, and willingness to practice new approaches between sessions.
